Gear up West Michigan your Ironmen are back!
On Thursday, January 16th, the Ironmen front office hosted a preseason press conference. Owner, Mario Flores was joined by head coach Terry Mitchell and AIF Owner Larry Clarke.
The Ironmen finished 4-0 last season and narrowly lost the championship to the Michigan Avengerz. Mitchell, who is heading into his third season at the helm, had a bad taste in his mouth after the championship loss. “We didn’t finish what we started last year, it’s a different story this year.” Mitchell said.
Mitchell started his tenure back in 2022, but he’s been in the organization dating back to 2016 when he was on the team as a player. “I remember coming here as a player 10 years ago, my son was about five months old at the time and now he’s 10 so to cap off my 10-year anniversary it’s amazing to be the head coach here. I’m looking forward to an amazing season, and our guys are really looking forward to compete for a championship.” Mitchell said in his opening remarks.
Mitchell and the rest of his staff are currently holding tryouts with their last one being on Saturday.
During the first couple of tryouts Mitchell explained a few of the “Diamond in the rough guys” the fan should watch out for heading into the season. “Linebacker Jalon Simpson, he’s about 6’5″ 250 pounds and he can move, he’s training for the Olympic tryouts right now.”
“We got a big receiver, Leroy Mackey, a knucklehead at times but I can work with that” Mitchell joked.
The Ironmen return their veteran quarterback, Alex Carter for the upcoming season. Carter played at Western Michigan University before coming to Muskegon. “We got guys coming back that we love, one of them being Alex Carter. It’s always good having a veteran quarterback in this type of league.” Mitchell added.
Flores who is a proud owner of your Ironmen heads into the season with great leadership. ““I will tell you this to our fans and our sponsors, you are going to have a commitment from me that you have never seen before.”
Flores took over the team and has since seen the attendance flourish from an average of 800 fans per game to now approximately 2200. “We are getting a lot of calls because the buzz is here, we’ve already sold out of our suits.”
The Ironmen are back in the AIF conference this season since departing in 2016.
